Welcome to Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square was constructed in 1987 and officially opened on the 5th November 1989, by the then Mayor of Whanganui, Chas Poynter.

Trafalgar Square Shopping Centre is located in the heart of Whanganui within walking distance of Victoria Avenue and the Whanganui River. Whanganui is within a 3-hour drive from Wellington, Taupo and New Plymouth. A heritage theme is carried throughout the city with many historic wooden buildings, gas lights and flowering hanging baskets.

Trafalgar Square is the only undercover shopping centre in Whanganui. It is a single level shopping centre with 4 main entrance ways that lead to a common area that services 20 specialty retailers as well as two major retailers – Countdown Supermarket and The Warehouse. Trafalgar Square comprises 13,000 square metres of floor space. The centre is serviced by 400 free car parks including 215 undercover car parks located below The Warehouse.

To ensure adequate parking bays are always available for customers there has been a change in the car park conditions.
The car park restrictions apply and is limited to three hours (180 minutes).
The car park will be monitored and enforced by Smart Compliance Management to ensure there is always parking bays for customers.
Smart Compliance Management’s ANPR system continuously monitors the car park 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to identify cars that are staying in the car park longer than the permitted parking period, or otherwise breach the T&C’s.
The owners of the identified vehicles will be issued with a $65 parking breach notice.
